# AI's Real Bottleneck Is Power: How an AI Agent Screened 25 Energy and Grid Stocks with Stocklake

*Published 2026-10-21 | tags: Research*

> An AI agent screened 25 AI power, grid and cooling stocks with Stocklake: a ranked top 10 as of Oct 20, six it cut, and what each report has to show.

Canonical: https://www.stocklake.dev/blog/ai-power-bottleneck-energy-grid-screen

**Read this first.** This post shows a research workflow, not investment advice. It is informational only and is not a recommendation to buy or sell any security. The list below is ranked by one screen, run on data as of the **October 20, 2026 close**. Prices, estimates and analyst targets move every day, and nine of the ten report earnings in the next three weeks. Stocklake doesn't generate trade calls.

In October, Amazon was reported to be taking early delivery of about $5 billion of Nvidia GB300 racks before some of its data centers had the power to run them, and storing the hardware until capacity was ready. In the same weeks, Elon Musk talked about roughly 13 GW of AI compute by 2027, a 440,000-GPU cluster by mid-2027, and another 20 GW of power and cooling infrastructure next year.

Put the two together and the constraint is plain. For a growing share of AI buildouts, the limit is no longer the chip. It is the electricity, the grid connection and the cooling. Hardware arrives faster than the power to switch it on.

That leaves a practical question: who supplies that power, and which of those companies looked reasonable to own after the selloff? I gave the question to an AI agent with Stocklake connected and watched how it worked through it. This post is what it found on October 20, what made the answer useful, and what each company's next earnings report has to show for the ranking to hold.

## Four layers of the power stack

The agent's first move was to split “AI power” into the four places money gets spent, from making the electricity to cooling the rack.

25 names. Europe gets its own column because the same spend shows up there at different prices.

- **Generators and nuclear:** [VST](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/VST), [CEG](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/CEG), [NRG](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/NRG), [TLN](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/TLN), [CCJ](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/CCJ), [OKLO](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/OKLO), [SMR](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/SMR)
- **Grid and turbines:** [GEV](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/GEV), [ETN](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/ETN), [PWR](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/PWR), [HUBB](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/HUBB), [BE](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/BE)
- **Data-center power and cooling:** [VRT](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/VRT), [NVT](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/NVT), [MOD](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/MOD), [FIX](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/FIX), [EME](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/EME)
- **Europe:** [PRY.MI](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/PRY.MI), [ENR.DE](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/ENR.DE), [SU.PA](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/SU.PA), [ABBN.SW](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/ABBN.SW), [LR.PA](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/LR.PA), [NEX.PA](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/NEX.PA), [SIE.DE](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/SIE.DE), [RWE.DE](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/RWE.DE)

The European names are covered under their home-exchange tickers (Milan, Xetra, Paris, Zurich), in the same data shape as the US ones. That mattered later: comparing [Prysmian](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/PRY.MI) with [Eaton](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/ETN) took one call, not a separate research project.

## How the agent worked through it

AI agent · Stocklake connected · Oct 20, 2026

The bottleneck for AI is power now. Who supplies it, and which of those stocks look attractive after the selloff? Cover the US and Europe. Rank a top 10 and give me their earnings dates.

**Scored** every name 1-10 on quality, forward-earnings value and price. **Ranked** a top 10, cut six, built the earnings calendar.

Market check, batch snapshot, four parallel deep dives, one ranked list.

**1. Read the tape first.** `get_market_assessment` (a Pro tool) came back cautious: regime CAUTIOUS, Fear & Greed at 28, oil at $97.81 after a 10% week, the 10-year yield at 5.12%. That set the tone. This was not a market paying for momentum, so the agent looked for quality that had been marked down rather than for breakouts.

**2. One batch snapshot.** A single `get_stocks` pass returned price, forward P/E, analyst targets, RSI and position against the 200-day average for all 25, plus three forensic accounting scores: Altman Z (balance-sheet distress), Piotroski F (financial strength) and Beneish M (an earnings-quality screen). `get_stocks` itself is free; the forensic scores in it are a Pro field.

**3. Parallel deep dives.** The agent split the work across four sub-agents, one per layer. Each pulled research, five years of statements plus quarterlies, earnings history and the trend in analyst targets for its names (all Pro; the free tier returns the latest fiscal year of statements), then scored each one on **Quality**, **Forward-earnings value** and **Price attractiveness**.

**4. Synthesis.** The four reports were merged into one ranked list and an earnings calendar.

## What the data said on October 20

The whole AI-power complex had sold off together. Of the 16 names that ended up ranked or cut, 15 closed October 20 below their 200-day average, and most sat between 20% and 50% under their 52-week highs. Strong balance sheets had been marked down with the weak ones.

That is when a screen like this earns its keep. When a theme sells off as a block, the differences between companies stop showing up in the price, but they are still in the financials. One caution applied to every name: none of these downtrends had turned yet. Oversold describes where a stock is, not that it has stopped falling.

## The top 10, ranked by our screen

| # | Company | Close Oct 20 | Fwd P/E | Off 52w high | What stood out | What to watch | Reports |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | [Comfort Systems](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/FIX) | $1,397.09 | 23.2x | 33% | Net cash ($1.85B cash, $0.33B debt). Q2 operating margin 17.0%, up from 13.8% a year earlier. PEG 0.48 | Only 8 analysts cover it | Oct 22 |
| 2 | [Vertiv](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/VRT) | $203.56 | 22.1x | 46% | $2.7B trailing free cash flow, Q2 operating margin 19.5% | Furthest from its high of the ten | Oct 28 |
| 3 | [Eaton](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/ETN) | $381.98 | 23.4x | 20% | Mean target up from $455.79 to $485.47 since July 20 | Total debt doubled, $10.5B to $21.8B in one quarter (Boyd Thermal deal) | Nov 3 |

| 6 | [Siemens Energy](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/ENR.DE) | €130.33 | 20.9x | 32% | Order book above €160B, €11.1B cash vs €3.0B debt | Beta 1.85: moves hard both ways | Nov 11 |
| 7 | [Vistra](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/VST) | $150.32 | 14.5x | 26% | Nuclear fleet, $4.2B conditional DOE loan, 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance $6.8B-7.6B | $19.9B of debt (June 30) | Nov 6 |
| 8 | [Legrand](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/LR.PA) | €128.10 | 18.5x | 23% | Operating margin 19.0%, mean target up from €162.68 to €169.22 | Lowest beta of the ten (0.96): less upside if the theme snaps back | Nov 5 |
| 9 | [GE Vernova](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/GEV) | $890.33 | 35.2x | 26% | $176B backlog, $13.1B cash vs $2.8B debt | Q2 operating margin 5.9%, highest multiple in the list | Oct 28 |
| 10 | [nVent](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/NVT) | $139.78 | 20.6x | 24% | Mean target up from $190.60 to $205.56 while the price fell | Beneish M at −1.78, right on the line | Oct 30 |

Closes as of October 20, 2026; forward P/E on that close. Balance-sheet figures are from each company's latest reported quarter. Targets are the analyst mean, July 20 vs October 20.

How to read it: [Comfort Systems](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/FIX) is first because it scored well on all three axes at once: net cash, a margin that is still rising, and a growth-adjusted valuation under 0.5 after a third came off the price. [GE Vernova](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/GEV) has arguably the best order book in the group, but at 35 times forward earnings on a single-digit operating margin, the price score held it to ninth. The screen ranks what you'd be paying for, not just how good the business is.

### What the screen left out

Being in the right theme was not enough. Six names were cut, each for a reason the numbers showed:

- **[Bloom Energy](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/BE):** 45x forward earnings on trailing EPS of $0.76, and the share count up 26% in a year (233.7M to 293.4M).
- **[Talen](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/TLN):** a GAAP loss (trailing EPS −$4.13) and $9.6B of debt.
- **[NRG](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/NRG):** 9x forward looks cheap only because forward EPS ($10.90) is nearly three times trailing GAAP EPS ($3.82). $23.5B of debt.
- **[Cameco](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/CCJ):** 43x forward and 136x trailing earnings.
- **[RWE](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/RWE.DE):** forward EPS (€3.36) below trailing (€4.51), and negative free cash flow of −€11.1B from the build-out.
- **[Modine](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/MOD):** negative free cash flow (−$74M) and a 9.0% operating margin, 55% off its high.

## What made the answer useful

A list of ten tickers is easy to get. What I didn't expect was how much of the reasoning behind each line the agent could show, and check, in the same session.

### It read the last earnings report, not just the price

`get_stock_research` and `get_earnings_intelligence` put each name's last quarter next to its multiple. For Comfort Systems: Q2 EPS of $12.53 against a $10.38 consensus, revenue of $3.26B against $2.94B, and a record $14.1B backlog, up 73% on the year. That is the context that makes 23x forward look different from 23x on a company that just missed.

### It caught the debt the headline skips

`get_stock_financials` returns each quarter's balance sheet on Pro, so the agent could see what an acquisition did to it. Eaton's total debt went from $10.5B at the end of 2025 to $21.8B at the end of March 2026, around the Boyd Thermal purchase. Prysmian's Atkore deal closed on October 19, partly paid for with €850M of new shares sold at €121, well above where the stock closed on October 20. Neither knocked the company out. Both moved it down the list.

### It didn't take a cheap forward P/E at face value

Forward estimates usually use adjusted earnings; trailing P/E uses GAAP. Divide one by the other and you get “growth” that may just be an accounting difference. NRG was the clearest case: 9.0x forward against 25.6x trailing, because forward EPS of $10.90 is 2.9 times trailing EPS of $3.82. The agent flagged the gap instead of calling the stock a bargain.

### A forensic score sent it to the receivables line

nVent's headlines were good: analysts were raising targets while the stock fell, and JPMorgan started coverage at overweight on October 20. But its Beneish M-score sat at −1.779, right at the −1.78 line where the model asks for a closer look. The agent pulled the statements to see why: in fiscal 2025, receivables grew 62% ($528M to $854M) while revenue grew 29.5% ($3.01B to $3.89B).

nVent, July 20 to October 20, from `get_analyst_trend` (Pro): targets up 8%, price down 10%.

That isn't evidence of anything wrong. Fast-growing businesses build receivables, and the most recent quarter cut the other way: in Q2 2026 receivables were up 29.6% on the year against revenue up 52.8%. But it is the reason nVent made the list at tenth with a question mark rather than higher, and it is a specific line to read in the next report.

### Europe priced the same theme lower

Prysmian at 17.0x and Schneider at 19.6x forward against Eaton at 23.4x and GE Vernova at 35.2x, for exposure to the same grid and electrification spend. Schneider had also just reported 16.9% organic growth, against 13.8% expected. Because the home listings come back in the same shape as US stocks, the agent could put them in one table without converting anything by hand.

## The agent kept watching

Nine of the ten were due to report within about three weeks of the screen. So I asked the agent for one more thing: give me each earnings date, remind me on the day, and when the numbers are out, tell me how the stock looks now against what the screen expected.

| Date | Ranked names reporting | Also reporting (cut) |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 16 | Schneider Electric (Q3 sales, before the screen) | |
| Oct 22 | Comfort Systems | Bloom Energy |
| Oct 27 | | Modine (estimated date) |
| Oct 28 | Vertiv, GE Vernova | |
| Oct 29 | Prysmian | |
| Oct 30 | nVent | Cameco |
| Nov 3 | Eaton | Talen |
| Nov 5 | Legrand | NRG (estimated date) |
| Nov 6 | Vistra | |
| Nov 11 | Siemens Energy | RWE |

Earnings dates as returned on October 21, 2026.

The first reminder is for Comfort Systems, which reports on October 22. This is what it looks like, built only from what the agent knows going in:

AI agent · Reminder · Oct 22, 2026

**FIX reports today.** Ranked #1 by the October 20 screen. Here's where it stands going in:

- Last close $1,397.09, 33% under its 52-week high, below its 200-day average ($1,594.50).
- 23.2x forward earnings. Mean analyst target $2,163.38 (8 analysts).
- Last quarter: EPS $12.53 vs $10.38 expected, operating margin 17.0%, backlog $14.1B.

**What the screen is betting on:** the margin holds near 17%, the backlog keeps growing, and cash stays above debt.

After the report: compare the reported numbers and the price reaction with the list above.

A reminder, not a recommendation: the point is to know what to check before the numbers land.

After each report, the follow-up runs the same calls again: `get_earnings_intelligence` for the result against expectations, `get_stock_financials` for the new quarter, `get_analyst_trend` for how targets moved, and `get_stocks` for where the price and multiple ended up. The table below lists what each of those checks looks for.

## What each report has to show

A ranking is a claim about what the next numbers will look like. Here is what each report has to show for the screen's reasoning to hold.

| # | Company | Reports | For the ranking to hold |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | [Comfort Systems](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/FIX) | Oct 22 | Margin near 17%, backlog still growing, cash above debt |
| 2 | [Vertiv](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/VRT) | Oct 28 | Free cash flow keeps pace with sales |
| 3 | [Eaton](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/ETN) | Nov 3 | Debt starts coming down after Boyd Thermal |
| 4 | [Prysmian](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/PRY.MI) | Oct 29 | Atkore adds earnings, not just debt |
| 5 | [Schneider Electric](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/SU.PA) | Reported Oct 16 | Q3 organic +16.9% vs 13.8% expected. Next: growth holds while the PTC bid plays out |
| 6 | [Siemens Energy](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/ENR.DE) | Nov 11 | Order book still growing |
| 7 | [Vistra](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/VST) | Nov 6 | Adjusted EBITDA on track for the $6.8B-7.6B guide |
| 8 | [Legrand](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/LR.PA) | Nov 5 | Operating margin steady near 19% |
| 9 | [GE Vernova](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/GEV) | Oct 28 | Margin moves up toward what the multiple assumes |
| 10 | [nVent](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/NVT) | Oct 30 | Receivables grow no faster than revenue |

Earnings dates as returned on October 21, 2026.

The six that were cut report on these dates: [Bloom Energy](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/BE) (reports Oct 22), [Modine](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/MOD) (Oct 27, estimated), [Cameco](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/CCJ) (Oct 30), [Talen](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/TLN) (Nov 3), [NRG](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/NRG) (Nov 5, estimated) and [RWE](https://www.stocklake.dev/stock/RWE.DE) (Nov 11).

## What I took from it

- **Read the regime before the stock.** A cautious tape changed what the agent looked for: marked-down quality, not momentum.
- **The forensic scores are worth a look every time.** One number at the edge of a threshold led straight to the line in the statements that mattered.
- **Check where forward earnings come from.** A forward P/E built on adjusted EPS against GAAP trailing EPS can make almost anything look cheap.
- **Look abroad for the same theme.** The European names offered the same exposure at lower multiples, and they were one call away.
- **A screen is a starting point with a date on it.** The useful part was setting up the follow-through: what each report has to show, checked on the day.

## Free vs Pro for this workflow

You can start this on the free tier. The parts that made the answer worth reading need Pro.

Free

- Prices, fundamentals, forward P/E and analyst consensus for all 25 names in one `get_stocks` call
- RSI and the 200-day average
- The latest fiscal year of statements
- Earnings dates for each name
- US and European home listings

Pro adds

- The market read: `get_market_assessment`
- Research and earnings context: `get_stock_research`, `get_earnings_intelligence`
- How analyst targets moved: `get_analyst_trend`
- Forensic scores (Altman Z, Piotroski F, Beneish M)
- Five years of statements plus quarterlies

On free, the agent can tell you Eaton carries $21.8B of debt. On Pro, it can show you that half of it arrived in one quarter.

## Try it on your own theme

Everything here came from Stocklake MCP tools that any AI agent can call: `get_market_assessment`, `get_stocks` with forensic scores, `get_stock_research`, `get_stock_financials`, `get_earnings_intelligence` and `get_analyst_trend`, across 3,500+ US and international symbols. Add Stocklake as a connector with the server URL `https://api.stocklake.dev/mcp`, then give your agent its own headline to work from. ## Frequently asked questions

Is this list a set of buy recommendations?

No. It is the ranked output of one screen on one date, shown to explain a research workflow. A rank says how a name scored on quality, forward value and price against the other 24 on October 20, nothing more.

Are the European stocks really covered?

Yes. Stocklake covers them under their home-exchange tickers, for example PRY.MI in Milan or ENR.DE on Xetra, with the same fields as US stocks: price, fundamentals, statements, forensic scores, analyst trends and earnings dates. Prices are in the local currency.

Do I need Pro for this?

For most of it, yes. The free tier covers prices, fundamentals, indicators and earnings dates. Research, earnings intelligence, analyst trends, forensic scores and multi-year statements are part of Pro.

Which Stocklake tools did the agent use, and which need Pro?

Six: get_market_assessment, get_stocks, get_stock_research, get_stock_financials, get_earnings_intelligence and get_analyst_trend. get_stocks and get_stock_financials are free, but the forensic scores and the multi-year and quarterly statements in them are Pro. get_market_assessment, get_stock_research, get_earnings_intelligence and get_analyst_trend are Pro-only tools.

Can my agent remind me on earnings day?

Stocklake supplies the earnings dates and the data for the check-in; the reminder itself comes from your agent or client, using its own scheduling. Ask it to note each date, and on the day to pull the latest numbers and compare them with what you expected.

How current is the data?

Prices update during trading hours. Analyst consensus is snapshotted once each weekday, which is what get_analyst_trend reads. Financial statements and forensic scores update after each company files a new period. Every figure in this post is dated for that reason.

Why look at forensic scores for fast-growing companies?

Because growth hides balance-sheet changes. A Beneish M-score near -1.78 or a falling Piotroski score is not a verdict, but it points to the line worth reading, as it did with nVent's receivables here.
