# Stocklake Pro Tier: What the Pro-Only Tools Unlock

*Published 2026-08-01 | updated 2026-09-06 | tags: Product*

> Eleven Pro-only MCP tools, the hidden Pro fields already inside get_stock and get_stocks, and what Stocklake's pro_required error actually returns to an agent.

If you're registered to the free tier, you're probably not thinking about upgrading. The [11 free tools](https://www.stocklake.dev/docs/tools) cover price, fundamentals, technical indicators, history, headlines, a screener, market movers, an earnings calendar, the latest fiscal year of statements, recent insider filings and a week of the macro calendar - a complete toolkit for "what's the price, what's the trend, what's coming up." Most simple agent builds never hit the 200-calls-a-day ceiling, let alone need anything else. So this isn't a fear-of-missing-out pitch. It's a straight answer to a question free users actually ask: what does Pro *do* that free doesn't, in terms an agent would notice?

## The part that's easy to miss: two tools you already call

`get_stock` and `get_stocks` aren't different tools on Pro - same call, same params. But the response carries two extra blocks that only populate for Pro callers: a **rating** (a 0-10 composite score plus direction, blended from six indicator groups - RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands, the SMA trend stack, Williams %R, and the Ultimate Oscillator - with transparent per-group weighting, not a black box) and a **signals** object (the full precomputed indicator stack individually labeled - those six plus VIX Fix, Williams A/D, DeMark TD Sequential, and Elliott Wave - instead of raw numbers you'd have to interpret yourself).

| Field | Free | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| price, fundamentals, RSI/MACD/Bollinger/SMA/EMA/ATR raw values | ✓ | ✓ |
| Williams %R, Ultimate Osc, VIX Fix, Williams A/D, DeMark, Elliott Wave | - | ✓ |
| `rating.score` + `rating.direction` | - | ✓ |
| `signals` per-indicator breakdown | - | ✓ |

Concretely: on free, you get RSI 22.4 and have to know that's oversold. On Pro, the same call returns a rating of 9.0 with `signals` showing RSI, Williams %R, Bollinger position, and the Ultimate Oscillator all independently flagging oversold at once - the agreement between four indicators is exactly what pushed the score that high, and you don't have to write the logic that checks for it.

Rating 9.0, positive - RSI at 22.4, Williams %R at -97, price below the lower Bollinger band, Ultimate Oscillator at 27.8. Four indicators agreeing is what's driving the score, not one number I'd take on faith.

## The 9 tools that don't exist on free at all, and 3 that are limited there

These aren't gated fields on a shared tool - calling them on a free key returns an error, not a partial response. Grouped by what they actually add:

**One-call research.** `get_stock_research` folds a stock's price, fundamentals, recent news, insider activity, and an AI-written summary (verdict, confidence, key points, risks) into a single response. The free-tier path to the same picture is 4-5 separate calls stitched together yourself; this is the version where the stitching already happened.

Analyst consensus is still strong_buy (58 analysts, target $303, ~46% upside) - but there's recent insider selling at scale with no offsetting buying. Not a reason to exit, but worth watching.

**The live signal feed.** `get_signals` is the curated cross-source queue described in [Calling It Signals](https://www.stocklake.dev/blog/calling-it-signals) - active, scored, sourced setups, not a raw dump you'd have to filter.

**Ownership and conviction context.** `get_insider_activity` - insider buy/sell counts plus institutional ownership, with the insider and institutional sides each scored and reconciled into one overall signal, not just a transaction list. The free tier gets the filing facts, the 5 most recent in 90 days; the scored read, the institutional side and the full year are Pro. [The companion post](https://www.stocklake.dev/blog/insider-trading-api-for-ai-agents) walks through a real case where the two sides disagree.

get_insider_activity({ symbol: "AAPL" })

Mixed read - two routine-sized insider sells against heavy institutional buying, reconciled to an overall NEUTRAL. Institutional ownership is 76.57% - high and stable, not a red flag by itself.

**Market and sector regime.** `get_market_assessment` (macro regime + market outlook merged - risk appetite, key risks, preferred/avoided sectors) and `get_sector_intelligence` (per-sector signal, rotation read, cycle stage). Free's `get_market_pulse` gives you VIX and breadth; these two answer "so what does that mean for where money's rotating."

Before I add to my Technology position - is this still the right sector to lean into?

Technology sector check

Weekly screener run

get_market_assessment({})

get_sector_intelligence({ sector: "Technology" })

Regime reads CAUTIOUS, outlook NEUTRAL - Technology's still on the preferred list, but rotation shows mid-cycle, not early. I'd size the add smaller than in a clearly early-cycle read.

**History with depth.** `get_indicator_history` - up to 730 days of daily indicator snapshots. Free's `get_stock_history` gives you OHLCV bars; this gives you the indicator's own trajectory over time, not just today's reading. It's also the one Pro tool with a real payload knob worth knowing about: it defaults to a slim 6-field snapshot (price, RSI, MACD histogram, Bollinger %B, SMA20/SMA200) and only returns the specialized fields - Williams %R, Ultimate Oscillator, VIX Fix, Williams A/D, DeMark, analyst rating and target - when you pass `full: true`.

**The raw statements, not just the score.** `get_stock_financials` - up to 5 years of annual balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow line items (plus the last 7-8 quarters), each line item returned across every available period in one call. The free tier gets the latest fiscal year only. This is the underlying data `forensic_scores`' Altman Z, Piotroski F, and Beneish M are computed from - for when you want to build your own ratios or checks on top of the real numbers instead of trusting someone else's formula.

**Macro calendar, at the economy level.** `get_economic_calendar` - recently released and upcoming interest rate decisions, CPI, GDP, and non-farm payrolls prints, with actual-vs-previous values, a `key_events_only` filter for just the market-moving releases, and a `major_only` filter to skip the smaller economies. The free tier sees 7 days ahead and 2 back, Pro 14 and 7. No AI, no synthesis - the same "what's coming up" precomputation as the free earnings calendar, just scoped to the whole economy instead of one company.

**Curated news, not a headline list.** `get_news_feed` - market-wide news pre-scored for relevance, versus free `get_stock_news`'s plain headlines with no AI fields.

**Forward-looking earnings read.** `get_earnings_intelligence` - an AI verdict and risk callouts per stock in the earnings window, not just the date and estimate.

**Your own list, tracked server-side.** `get_watchlist` - account-scoped, resolves from your key automatically, no client-side state to maintain.

## What actually happens when a free key hits a Pro tool

Not a bare 403. The error itself is built to be useful even if you don't upgrade on the spot:

```
{
  "error": "pro_required",
  "message": "This tool needs Pro tier...",
  "preview": {
    "symbol": "NUVL", "direction": "LONG",
    "signal_score_band": "Very Strong"
  },
  "upgrade": "https://stocklake.dev/pricing?ref=mcp"
}
```

The pro_required error, rendered as the agent would see it

The `preview` is real (truncated) data - one live example, not a mocked screenshot. The raw 0-100 [signal_score](https://www.stocklake.dev/blog/the-signal-score) itself stays Pro-only; the band is the free-safe version, same boundary every other locked preview in the API draws. If you're an agent relaying this to whoever's using you, you can say "there's a Very Strong live signal on NUVL, but reading the full feed - the actual score, source, and rationale - needs Pro" instead of just failing silently or making something up.

## Where this actually changes a decision

A realistic chain: free's `get_screener` narrows a sector down to a shortlist - that part costs nothing extra. Then, for the 2-3 names that made the cut, Pro's `get_stock` rating tells you which ones have technical agreement worth a closer look (a 9.0 vs a 6.0 is a real filter, not noise), and `get_stock_research` gives you the one-call deep dive on whichever passed that bar. You're not paying for Pro on every call - you're paying for it on the handful of names that made it past a free filter first. That's the actual shape of how it gets used, not "everything now costs more."

$20/month

· 5,000 calls/day · all 20 tools

7-day trial - every Pro tool is usable before your card is charged, cancel any time during the trial window.

If the 11 free tools already answer what you need, there's no reason to change anything. If you've found yourself making 4 calls to answer one question, or wishing a rating number existed instead of raw indicator values you have to interpret - that's the actual signal (no pun intended) that Pro would save you real work, not just add a checkbox.

## Frequently asked questions

How much does Stocklake Pro cost?

$20/month for 5,000 calls a day across all 20 tools. Every Pro tool is usable during the 7-day trial before your card is charged, and you can cancel any time during that window.

What happens when a free API key calls a Pro-only tool?

You get a `pro_required` error, not a bare 403 - it includes a small preview of real (truncated) data from that tool plus a link to upgrade, so an agent relaying the response can describe what's there instead of failing silently or making something up.

Do I need Pro to see technical indicators like RSI or MACD?

Not for the standard set - RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands, SMA/EMA averages, and ATR come back as raw values on free `get_stock` and `get_stocks` calls. The specialized indicators (Williams %R, Ultimate Oscillator, VIX Fix, Williams A/D, DeMark TD Sequential, Elliott Wave) are Pro-only, and so is the interpreted layer: the 0-10 rating with direction, plus each indicator individually labeled (oversold, positive, and so on) instead of numbers you'd have to interpret yourself.
